Lodge at the Xugana Lagoon in the Okavango Delta
Xugana Island Lodge is situated on a private island on Xugana Lagoon in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. The lagoon is part of the Delta’s permanently water-filled areas, where winding channels, extensive floodplains and vegetated islands provide a diverse habitat for wildlife and birdlife. The lodge’s remote location makes it possible to explore this water-rich landscape primarily on boat trips and in traditional dugout canoes known as mokoros.
Accommodation at Xugana Island Lodge
The lodge is one of the long-established safari properties in the Okavango Delta. It is operated by Desert & Delta Safaris, a safari company founded in 1982 that manages several established lodges in Botswana. The accommodation is situated along the island’s vegetated edge, overlooking the lagoon. There are twelve luxurious safari tents, two of which can be booked as a family suite with an interconnecting door. The tented suites are set on raised wooden platforms and feature private viewing decks, some of which are complemented by covered sections. The bathrooms are equipped with both indoor and outdoor showers. Additional amenities include fans, a safe, a hairdryer and tea- and coffee-making facilities.
The main building offers several communal areas overlooking the lagoon, including a lounge, a bar, indoor and outdoor dining areas, and multi-level viewing decks. A swimming pool and shaded seating beneath large mahogany trees complement the facilities. One distinctive feature is the fire deck, which extends over the water and provides unobstructed views of the night sky in the evening. Meals are generally served communally, although private dining can also be arranged on request. Services include daily laundry and Wi-Fi in the guest tents, although the satellite connection is not always reliable.
Activities and tours at Xugana Island Lodge
Activities focus on the aquatic landscape and its wildlife. Motorboat trips explore deeper channels and lagoons, while mokoro excursions offer a quieter way to discover shallow waterways and floodplains. Guided walks on the surrounding islands provide opportunities to observe wildlife on foot. Excursions also offer opportunities to explore the Delta’s birdlife, while seasonal fishing trips follow a catch-and-release policy. Scenic helicopter flights are available at an additional cost. The lodge welcomes children aged six and above. Year-round excursions are accompanied by experienced guides.
