Jao Camp

Exclusive, luxury camp in the Okavango Delta

Jao Camp is situated on a remote island in the heart of the Okavango Delta, within the private Jao Reserve. The landscape is characterised by permanent and seasonal waterways, floodplains, islands and riverine woodland. The reserve is dedicated to preserving the Okavango ecosystem, including its waterways, dry islands, vegetation, birdlife and wildlife. Depending on the water levels, the way the camp and its surroundings are experienced also changes. During periods of high water, the camp can be reached from Jao Airstrip via an approximately ten-minute drive.

Accommodation at Jao Camp

The history of Jao is closely linked to the development of what is now the Jao Reserve. The Kays family has been associated with Ngamiland since the late 19th century. Following the securing of concession NG25 in 1998, the first camps – Jao, Jacana and Kwetsani – were established. Jao Camp welcomed its first guests in July 1999 and subsequently became the namesake of the present-day Jao Reserve.

Jao Camp has a total of seven accommodation units: five spacious suites and two particularly exclusive villas. The open-plan suites feature a living area, dressing area, bedroom, bathroom, air conditioning and heating, as well as a small kitchen and dining area. Each accommodation unit has its own pool and private outdoor area overlooking the surrounding landscape. The two villas are designed for families or small groups and additionally include a private butler, chef and safari vehicle, as well as separate living areas and fire pits.

The central area of the premium camp is equally spacious. The main building features indoor and outdoor living and dining areas, a lounge and bar, as well as fire pits. A gallery connects the library, museum or exhibition area, curio shop and wine cellar. Additional facilities include a swimming pool, fitness room and two spa treatment rooms. The camp is entirely solar-powered.

Activities and tours at Jao Camp

Safari activities include game drives across the drier islands and floodplains, mokoro excursions along the waterways, boat trips, guided walks and seasonal catch-and-release fishing. The camp's location in the Delta also provides excellent opportunities for birdwatching, while helicopter flights offer a different perspective of the surrounding landscape. Guests staying in the villas can enjoy individually tailored activities with a private guide and safari vehicle.
