Kanana
Camp in the south-western part of the Okavango Delta
Kanana Camp is located in the southwestern Okavango Delta on the Xudum River, within a private concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve. The landscape consists of a characteristic combination of islands, channels and seasonally flooded plains, with palm, fig, ebony and knobthorn trees. As the water levels change, so does the character of the region. During the flood season, parts of the concession become an extensive water landscape that can be explored by mokoro and motorboat. When water levels are lower, game drives and guided walking safaris become the main focus.
Accommodation at Kanana
Kanana has been part of the Ker & Downey Botswana portfolio since 2000 and has since been extensively rebuilt and redesigned. The camp offers a total of eight tented units: seven spacious safari tents, available with either double or twin beds, and one family tent with two separate bedrooms. The tents are positioned at a distance from one another, providing guests with privacy. All accommodations have private bathrooms with spacious showers, while the family tent also features an outdoor shower and can accommodate up to five guests. The tents are set on raised decks, offering views across the surrounding landscape. During the seasonal floods, the elevated position is particularly impressive as the water can reach the areas around the camp.
The main guest area is also raised and comprises lounge, dining and bar areas overlooking the surrounding landscape. The camp also features a swimming pool and a firepit. A special feature is the sleep-out deck, where guests can spend a night beneath the African stars, subject to the season and weather conditions. The experience includes a bed beneath a mosquito net, a private bathroom with a heated shower, as well as dinner and breakfast around the fire. The sleep-out experience is offered from April to November.
Activities and tours at Kanana
Safari activities include daytime and night game drives, guided walks, mokoro excursions, seasonal boat trips and fishing. The range of activities depends on the natural water levels of the Okavango Delta. During the flood season in particular, Kanana's location on the Xudum River combines traditional wildlife viewing with the distinctive experience of exploring the Delta's extensive waterways. The location also provides access to an important heronry, while the area's birdlife includes regular sightings of Pel's Fishing Owl.
