Ghanzi region in Botswana
The Ghanzi region includes the western part of Botswana bordering Namibia around the small town of Ghanzi and the northern areas around the Tsodilo Hills (western Ngamiland). The region shown here on Info-Botswana is not congruent with the Ghanzi political district.
The region is located at an altitude of about 900 meters above sea level and is located in the central part of the Kalahari Basin. The climate is typical for Botswana, hot summers with daily highs of 30 ° C to 45 ° C and mild winters with lows ranging from 5 ° C to -5 ° C and highs of about 25 ° C. The main rainfall occurs in the months January to April. The annual precipitation is at about 375 mm, with high variations from year to year.
The landscape around Ghanzi is flat and sandy, dominated by grass- and thorn savannah. The economic basis of the population is livestock, so there is hardly any game except in the game reserves.
Tsodilo Hills is a range of hills with of the highest concentrations of rock paintings worldwide. As these paintings are extremely unique, Tsodilo Hills was proclaimed as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.
