Island camp in the Okavango Delta
Jacana Camp is situated on a small, teardrop-shaped island in the Jao Flats in the heart of the Okavango Delta and forms part of the private Jao Reserve, within Wildlife Management Area NG25. Water defines the landscape, with papyrus-fringed channels, seasonally flooded plains, lily-covered lagoons and palm-studded islands creating a distinctive Delta environment. During the annual flood season, Jacana is primarily accessed by water, revealing its character as a classic water-based camp. Its remote setting combines an immersive wilderness experience with a small and intimate camp atmosphere.
Accommodation at Jacana Camp
The camp has a total of five spacious, en-suite tented suites, each raised on wooden decks. The tents feature private decks overlooking the waterways as well as outdoor showers, and the accommodation includes a family tent. The camp retains the character of a traditional Delta camp, with the elevated tents nestled beneath palms and mature trees and offering immediate views of the surrounding waterways. Jacana is fully solar-powered, helping to minimise its environmental footprint and reduce reliance on conventional energy sources.
The main guest area is also elevated on a wooden platform. It comprises an open-sided dining area, lounge and spacious deck, complemented by a firepit and swimming pool. Meals are prepared using seasonal and locally sourced ingredients and served in a relaxed setting. With its small scale and intimate atmosphere, the camp provides a peaceful environment where the surrounding wilderness remains the focus.
Activities and tours at Jacana Camp
Jacana specialises in water-based safari experiences. Mokoro excursions provide an almost silent way of exploring the Delta, gliding through narrow channels and fields of water lilies, while boating excursions allow guests to venture further across the waterways. During the appropriate season, catch-and-release fishing is also available. Game drives complement the water activities, particularly when lower water levels provide access to the drier areas of the concession. Guided walks and birdwatching are further options, with the combination of open water, channels and palm-covered islands providing excellent opportunities to observe the Delta's diverse birdlife. Helicopter flights are also available, offering an aerial perspective of the Okavango landscape.
