Vumbura Plains Camp
Premier camp in the Okavango Delta
Vumbura Plains Camp is located in the northern Okavango Delta in Botswana, within a private concession covering approximately 60,000 hectares, which it shares with the neighbouring Little Vumbura Camp. The landscape is characterised by permanent waterways, seasonal floodplains, open grasslands and wooded islands. These diverse habitats offer a variety of safari experiences on land and water throughout the year. In addition to elephants, buffaloes, lions and leopards, visitors may also encounter African wild dogs and various antelope species.
Accommodation at Vumbura Plains Camp
Operated by Wilderness, the camp consists of two separate areas connected by elevated wooden walkways: Vumbura Plains North, with eight thatched tented suites, and Vumbura Plains South, with six. Both family units are located in the northern camp. Each features two separate bedrooms with private bathrooms and entrances, as well as a shared terrace with a plunge pool. One of the family units also has a covered lounge area, making it suitable for families with younger children. All accommodations are spacious, set on raised wooden platforms and offer expansive views across the floodplains. Amenities include a private bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers, a sunken lounge area, a private terrace with a small swimming pool, and a covered pavilion suitable for relaxation or private dining. Mosquito nets, fans, a safe, a minibar, and tea and coffee-making facilities complete the amenities.
The central communal area comprises an open-plan lounge, a dining area and a bar. Its design incorporates colours and materials inspired by the surrounding landscape, connecting the indoor spaces with the viewing terraces. The kitchen uses seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, supporting local producers. Specialities include traditional dishes prepared with the root of the water lily, known as “Tswii” in Setswana, as well as Phaphata bread baked over an open fire.
An essential part of the camp’s philosophy is its partnership with the Okavango Community Trust and residents of five neighbouring villages. The collaboration supports local communities through skills development, education and economic opportunities, linking tourism with nature conservation.
Activities and tours at Vumbura Plains Camp
Activities include morning, afternoon and night game drives, guided walking safaris, mokoro excursions in traditional dugout canoes, and motorboat trips, depending on water levels. Catch-and-release fishing is also available. Hot-air balloon safaris can be arranged at an additional cost.
