Lodge in the Chobe National Park
The luxurious five-star lodge is situated directly on the banks of the Chobe River in the northern part of Chobe National Park. It is the only permanently operating lodge within the national park, and its privileged location allows guests to enjoy safari activities directly from the lodge. The lodge dates back to 1973, when it opened as Botswana’s first luxury safari lodge. It also gained international attention in 1975 when Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were married here.
Accommodation at Chobe Game Lodge
Set among mature mahogany trees, the lodge offers 40 spacious rooms and four suites. All rooms feature a private terrace overlooking the Chobe River, air conditioning, a ceiling fan and an en-suite bathroom with a bathtub and separate shower. Accommodation includes Standard and Family Rooms, as well as four spacious Family and Honeymoon Suites with private balconies, separate living areas and private plunge pools. Two rooms are specially designed for guests with reduced mobility.
The heart of the lodge is a more than 250-metre-long elevated wooden boardwalk with several viewing points along the river. From here, guests can observe wildlife in the floodplain without having to leave the lodge grounds. Several lounges and seating areas provide places to relax and socialise, while the Tswene Rooftop Bar and Linyanti Bar offer additional spaces to enjoy the surroundings. Other facilities include a large swimming pool, a spa offering a range of treatments, an air-conditioned fitness room, a curio shop and a conference area accommodating up to 90 people.
Activities and tours at Chobe Game Lodge
Activities focus on the Chobe River and the surrounding national park. Morning and afternoon game drives are conducted in open 4x4 vehicles, while four electric safari boats operate on the river. Their quiet operation allows guests to observe wildlife along the riverbanks, including elephants, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes and various antelope species.
Eco-tours offer an insight into the lodge’s environmental and recycling initiatives. Chobe Game Lodge is committed to responsible tourism and received one of Botswana’s highest ecotourism awards in 2012. Its environmental measures include solar power, electric vehicles and boats, greywater treatment, recycling and a biogas plant. The lodge also supports local youth programmes and the training of women as safari guides.
