Guided Mokoro Boat Trip near the Moremi Game Reserve
Guided full-day mokoro tours, offered by Island Mobile Safaris from Maun, provide a unique opportunity to explore the area around the Moremi Game Reserve from a traditional dugout canoe. Gliding along in complete silence, you will discover the waterways, reed-lined banks, and lagoons of one of Africa's most fascinating reserves.
The wildlife in this concession near the Moremi Game Reserve can be observed undisturbed from the mokoro. Guests often see lechwe antelopes, buffaloes, elephants, and hippos, as well as small reed frogs, dragonflies, and the incredible variety of birdlife in this remarkable wetland. Without the noise of an engine to startle the animals, you gain an entirely new perspective on wildlife in its natural habitat.

Guided Mokoro Day Tour close to Moremi Game Reserve
The Mokoro tour begins at 8 AM at the Island Safari Lodge, where you will receive an introduction to the day's schedule. You will be taken with an open 4x4 vehicle for about an hour towards Moremi Game Reserve. At the Buffalo Fence, the veterinary fence that separates local cattle herds from the Moremi Game Reserve, you will be met by a local guide.
You will spend most of the day in the Mokoro, exploring the channels of the stunning Okavango Delta. Your guide, standing at the back of the boat, will silently propel the Mokoro with the Nkashi (wooden pole), while you sit at the front, undisturbed, soaking in nature. This experience brings you close to the wilderness of the Okavango Delta as you enjoy the tranquility of the waterways, the sounds of nature all around, and encounters with wildlife.
If interested, there is also the option during the Mokoro tour, to explore one of the islands on foot with the local guide.
When you return to the Buffalo Fence in the afternoon, your driver from Island Mobile Safaris will already be waiting for you. The Mokoro day tour also concludes back at Island Safari Lodge, usually late in the afternoon or after sunset. Therefore, we recommend staying for two nights in this relatively inexpensive accommodation.
Please note: Mokoro tours are dependent on water levels and can only be conducted when water levels are sufficiently high.
