Chief’s Island offers some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in the Okavango and is one of the best places in all of Botswana to see the Big Five (elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, rhinoceros).

Chief’s Island
Chief’s Island is approximately 70 km long and 15 km wide and is known for its high density of wildlife. When the annual Okavango floods raise the water level in the Okavango Delta, large herds of antelope, giraffes, zebras, and buffalo use the island as a refuge. This also attracts Moremi’s predators, such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and African wild dogs.
Birdwatchers will also find Chief’s Island a paradise. Moremi is home to around 500 bird species, including iconic birds such as the rare Pel’s fishing owl, the African fish eagle, and the malachite kingfisher.
In the past, Chief’s Island was the exclusive hunting ground of the local tribal leader, hence the name "Chief's Island."
Guided Full-Day Boat Tour to Chief’s Island
The full-day tour starts at 8 AM at the Island Safari Lodge, where your guide will welcome you. From Maun, you will take a boat ride north, reaching the small village of Boro in about 45 minutes. From there, the boat captain will slow down, allowing you to explore the wilderness of the Okavango Delta in “cruise mode.”
After approximately 3.5 to 4 hours, you will reach Chief’s Island and spend the day discovering this natural wonder of Botswana. As you enjoy the tranquility of the waterways, you will have many opportunities to observe and photograph the diverse wildlife.
In the afternoon, you will return to the Island Safari Lodge. For this full-day boat tour, we recommend staying for two nights at this relatively affordable accommodation.
