Okavango Spirit Houseboat

Safari experience on the waters of the Okavango Delta

The Okavango Spirit Houseboat is an exclusive water-based accommodation located in the northwestern part of the Okavango Delta, in the Panhandle region near Shakawe. This remote section of the Delta is characterized by tranquil channels, dense papyrus swamps, and an exceptional variety of birdlife. Less developed for tourism than the central Delta, the area offers a particularly authentic and peaceful safari experience. Access is either by flight from Maun directly to the Okavango Spirit or via a five-hour drive through the Delta’s rural villages to Shakawe, where the houseboat is moored.

Accommodation at Okavango Spirit Houseboat

The two-story houseboat features seven spacious cabins, each with a private bathroom, fan, and panoramic windows overlooking the water. In addition to a comfortable lounge and a sun deck, guests have access to an open dining area where freshly prepared meals are served. The entire boat can be exclusively booked for a minimum of two nights and is ideal for small groups or families.

Activities and tours at Okavango Spirit Houseboat

Nature is at the heart of any stay aboard the Okavango Spirit. Guests embark on daily excursions in small motorboats through the surrounding channels, where hippos, crocodiles, antelope, and—with a bit of luck—even elephants can be seen along the banks. The birdlife is particularly impressive, featuring kingfishers, fish eagles, and the rare Narina trogon, named after a woman of the Khoi Khoi people—her name meaning "flower". Those seeking quiet and calm can explore the Delta by traditional mokoro—a dugout canoe that glides silently through the papyrus reeds. Guided fishing trips are also available, offering the chance to catch tigerfish and bream. For those interested in culture, optional visits can be arranged to a nearby village or the world-renowned Tsodilo Hills, home to ancient rock paintings and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Day trips into Namibia’s Bwabwata National Park are also possible.
