Rustic lodge in the northern Okavango Delta
In the northern part of the Okavango Delta in Botswana, on the shores of one of its largest lagoons, lies Nguma Island Lodge – a charming retreat for nature enthusiasts. For those arriving, Nguma Island Lodge offers several options: the lodge has its own bush airstrip, allowing guests to arrive by small aircraft. Guests traveling by car should plan for a 4×4 vehicle, especially for the last few kilometers over sandy tracks and unpaved roads.
Accommodation at Nguma Island Lodge
The lodge features 20 Meru-style tents of varying sizes, built on wooden platforms and connected by walkways, allowing guests to stay amid the lush delta landscape under a canopy of greenery. Each tent has its own veranda with a table and chairs, basic electricity for lighting and device charging, and an en-suite bathroom with a shower, toilet, and sink. WiFi is available in the communal areas.
In addition, there are five campsites. Guests can bring their own tent or camping vehicle, or tents and other camping equipment can be provided on request. Shared bathroom facilities and well-equipped cooking areas are available. There are also glamping options, including a tent type with a veranda, mattresses, and daily service.
Nguma Island Lodge’s restaurant offers a varied and delicious dining experience. Between meals, guests can relax at the bar and enjoy a selection of drinks.
Activities and tours at Nguma Island Lodge
The lodge offers a wide range of activities. Birdwatchers are especially well catered for, with over 400 bird species identified. Some of the most sought-after species include the Pel’s Fishing Owl and African Fish Eagle, as well as numerous herons, cormorants, and other waterbirds. In addition, the lodge offers mokoro trips in traditional dugout canoes, boat and sunset cruises on the lagoon, fishing excursions, and nature walks to secluded lagoons or through the surrounding delta landscape.
