Mokolwane

Charming safari camp in the southwest of the Okavango Delta

The small Mokolwane camp is located in the remote southwest of the Okavango Delta, within the private NG/29 concession. This region is renowned for its pristine wilderness, abundant wildlife, and particularly for excellent leopard sightings. Those seeking an authentic, nature-based safari experience off the beaten track will find exactly that at Mokolwane. Access to the camp is by light aircraft to a nearby airstrip, followed by a scenic 45-minute drive through the bush to reach the camp.

Accommodation at Mokolwane

Mokolwane is intentionally kept small and intimate, with just seven spacious tented chalets set on raised wooden platforms scattered throughout the landscape. Each chalet features a private bathroom with shower and toilet, as well as a veranda offering views of the surrounding wilderness—often with wildlife visible right from your doorstep. The interior design is simple yet stylish, focusing on the essentials without sacrificing comfort. The main area of the camp is open and welcoming, with a lounge, bar, and dining area where guests come together for meals or to relax around the campfire in the evenings. Electricity is primarily supplied by solar power, and there is no Wi-Fi or mobile signal—intentionally, to allow for a deeper connection with nature and an immersive experience in the bush.

Activities and tours at Mokolwane

Safari activities at Mokolwane include daily game drives in open 4x4 vehicles, both in the early morning and late afternoon. Night drives are also possible, as the camp lies within a private concession of over 2,000 square kilometers, where such activities are permitted. During the dry season, when water levels are lower, mokoro excursions are also offered—peaceful journeys by traditional dugout canoe through the shallow channels of the Delta. This slow-paced form of exploration offers a unique and intimate perspective on the Okavango’s intricate water network and its quiet beauty.

The best time to visit is between May and October, when the Delta is mostly dry and wildlife gathers around the remaining water sources. However, the green season (November to April) has its own appeal, especially for birdwatchers and photographers, with lush landscapes and dramatic skies.
