Maxa
A secluded luxury camp on the Maxa Lagoon
Maxa is located in the north-eastern Okavango Delta on the permanently water-filled Maxa Lagoon, where the Selinda Spillway begins. The camp lies beneath the dense canopy of large ebony trees in a remote landscape of permanent and seasonal waterways, lagoons, floodplains and riverine woodland. The region forms part of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA), a cross-border conservation area spanning parts of several countries in southern Africa. Maxa is accessed via Mapula Airstrip or Xarakai, followed by a short helicopter transfer to the camp.
Accommodation at Maxa
Maxa opened on 20 March 2025, making it one of the newer camps operated by Ker & Downey Botswana. The camp is deliberately small and accommodates a maximum of twelve guests. There are five luxurious safari tents, each set on a wooden deck and featuring an en-suite bathroom inside the tent as well as an additional completely open-air bathroom. The family unit consists of two bedrooms sharing a bathroom, with an additional outdoor bathroom. Rather than focusing on imposing lodge architecture, the design emphasises a close connection with the surrounding environment. Lightweight canvas roofs, traditional clay walls and handcrafted furnishings define the camp.
The central area comprises separate lounge and dining spaces as well as a sandy courtyard with simple picnic tables, where meals can be enjoyed outdoors or in the shade. A distinctive feature of the main area is a termite mound. A wood-fired oven is used, among other things, for baking bread and muffins. At the edge of the riverine woodland is a sala with a daybed, raised deck and a hammock made from stretched netting, overlooking the lagoon. A library and Wi-Fi are also available.
Activities and tours at Maxa
Days at Maxa are centred around exploring the surrounding wilderness. Mokoro excursions provide an opportunity to experience the waterways and lagoons of the Okavango Delta at close quarters, while guided bush walks offer an intimate way to discover the landscape, wildlife and animal tracks. These activities are complemented by day and night game drives and nature drives. Cultural experiences are also part of the programme, offering insights into the history and natural heritage of this diverse region.
