Rustic safari camp in the private Khwai concession
Camelthorn Bush Camp is located about a two-hour drive from Maun, set between the Moremi Game Reserve, the eastern fringes of the Okavango Delta, and close to Chobe National Park. The camp is open during the dry season from April to September, the best time for game viewing. Children from the age of seven are welcome, making it a good option for adventurous families.
Accommodation at Camelthorn Bush Camp
Guests stay in simple yet comfortable safari tents equipped with proper beds and en-suite bathrooms. Instead of unnecessary luxury, the focus here is on closeness to nature and sustainability: warm showers are provided in the form of traditional bucket showers, lighting is solar-powered, and the campfire is the social centerpiece each evening. The main area includes a bar tent with a solar charging station as well as a dining tent with a tea and coffee station.
Activities and Excursions at Camelthorn Bush Camp
The camp offers a wide variety of safari experiences with a focus on authentic encounters with nature. Classic game drives in open 4x4 vehicles explore both the private concession and the adjacent Moremi Game Reserve, where wildlife sightings are particularly rewarding. A highlight are mokoro excursions, where guests glide silently through the Delta’s waterways in traditional dugout canoes – a unique way to observe hippos, crocodiles, and an abundance of birdlife. For a different perspective, guided night drives provide the opportunity to spot nocturnal animals such as leopards, hyenas, and genets.
