Baines' Lodge
An intimate lodge in a vast wetland
In the shimmering water labyrinth of the Okavango Delta, between the Moremi Game Reserve and the papyrus-fringed banks of the Boro River, lies Baines’ Lodge – the smallest and most intimate of the Sanctuary safari lodges. Renovated in 2025, it is a true gem that meets the highest standards of design, comfort, and sustainability. The surrounding environment is a unique interplay of water, islands, papyrus, and seasonally flooded grasslands, shaped by meandering channels, lagoons, and narrow waterways.
Accommodation at Baines' Lodge
The lodge consists of only six suites, raised on stilts above the water and connected by wooden walkways. Each suite is divided into indoor and outdoor areas, with about 61 m² of indoor space and an additional 58 m² outside. Guests enjoy a bedroom with a super king-size bed, a bathroom, a lounge, and a spacious outdoor terrace. Generous overhangs provide shade, while sustainably sourced wood—used both structurally and decoratively—has been carefully chosen for durability and a minimal ecological footprint. The design is chic and elegant, pared down yet warm, with colors and textures inspired by the delta’s flora and waterways: soft earth tones and natural woods dominate the look.
The communal areas are designed to keep the landscape and wildlife ever-present. A lounge with a library, binoculars, interactive maps, and a microscope invites guests to small-scale discoveries; there is also a boutique with locally made handicrafts, as well as a restaurant and bar overlooking the water. A swimming pool, flanked by two of the suites, provides a refreshing break after safari adventures. Most of the facilities are powered by solar energy, with a generator on standby for emergencies.
Activities and tours at Baines' Lodge
The activities are as varied as the landscape itself. Twice daily, in the early morning and late afternoon, game drives set out in search of elephants, lions, leopards, wild dogs, and an abundance of bird life. In the dry season, guided walking safaris are available, while in the flood season guests can explore the delta by motorboat or mokoro canoe. Night drives offer the chance to spot nocturnal animals, often under a brilliant canopy of stars. For those seeking something truly spectacular, scenic helicopter flights provide breathtaking views of the vastness and intricate beauty of the delta from above.
