Planet Baobab
Colourful desert living beneath Baobab trees
On the edge of the small village of Gweta, between Maun and the vast salt pans of the Makgadikgadi, lies Planet Baobab – a truly unique camp known for its colourful design, creative atmosphere and spectacular setting beneath ancient baobab trees. From the moment you arrive, you’ll feel the special character of the place: a vibrant mix of traditional clay architecture, local craftsmanship and laid-back Kalahari charm. For travellers looking to explore Botswana with all senses engaged, this is the perfect stopover – colourful, grounded, and unlike anywhere else.
Accommodation at Planet Baobab
Planet Baobab is famous for its distinctive aesthetic. The accommodations are circular, thatched huts decorated with vivid patterns and handcrafted details that reflect Botswana’s cultural heritage. The camp features fifteen standard huts and three larger family units – all equipped with en-suite bathrooms, outdoor showers and cool interiors thanks to their thick mud walls. For budget-conscious travellers or self-drivers, a shaded campsite is available beneath the towering baobabs. At the heart of the property, the spacious bar and restaurant area invites guests to relax. Rustic furniture, quirky decorations and a laid-back atmosphere create a space that feels somewhere between an artist’s retreat and a bush camp. Delicious meals are served here, stories are shared around the fire, and the days flow by at Kalahari pace. On particularly hot days, the camp’s large swimming pool – said to be the biggest in the Kalahari – offers welcome relief, surrounded by sand and trees.
Activities and tours at Planet Baobab
Planet Baobab is an ideal base for exploring the dramatic landscapes of the Makgadikgadi salt pans. Guests can join guided excursions on foot, by vehicle or quad bike – for example, to the expansive Ntwetwe Pan, where overnight stays under the stars are possible during the dry season. In addition to these natural adventures, the lodge places great value on cultural exchange. Visitors are invited to take part in village tours or visit local cattle posts to learn about the traditional lives of the Bakalanga or San communities.
