Nature experience on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans
Pelican Lodge is located approximately 4 km south of Nata along the A3, around 185 km north of Francistown, on the eastern edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans and directly adjacent to the Nata Bird Sanctuary. This makes the lodge an ideal base for excursions to the salt pans and the sanctuary, as well as a convenient stopover on the route between Francistown, Maun, the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park and Victoria Falls. The lodge is part of the Botswana-based company The Wild Lodges. It opened in 2012 and became involved in the local community around Nata during its early years, including support for a local primary school.
Accommodation at Pelican Lodge
Pelican Lodge has 66 beds across a range of accommodation options. These include freestanding chalets, double and twin rooms, family rooms and a presidential suite. All rooms feature private bathrooms, with some also offering outdoor showers, as well as air conditioning, television, a refrigerator, telephone and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Internet access is also available. The accommodation is complemented by a campsite with private ablution facilities, electricity connections, hot and cold water, barbecue facilities and a large fire pit. Shared ablution facilities, a laundry service and a covered cooking area are also available.
The main communal facilities include two restaurants and two bars. The à-la-carte restaurant is located upstairs, while the traditional outdoor Boma restaurant can accommodate up to 200 guests and serves buffet meals, grilled dishes and traditional Botswana cuisine. A bar on the ground floor and a cocktail bar at the Boma overlooking the swimming pool complete the dining and leisure facilities. A distinctive feature of the lodge is its swimming pool, which is shaped like the outline of Africa. Two conference rooms are available for events and business functions; one accommodates up to 100 people, while the larger room can seat up to 500 guests in cinema-style seating.
Activities and tours at Pelican Lodge
The Nata Bird Sanctuary forms part of the Makgadikgadi Pan system and is situated within the Sua Pan, the largest of the three major pans in this system. The landscape changes considerably with the seasons, attracting a wide variety of bird species and wildlife. Guided excursions are offered to the bird sanctuary and the Makgadikgadi Pans. Other activities include morning, afternoon and night game drives, quad biking, picnics and traditional barbecue evenings. Cultural excursions visit the San village of Manxotae, where guests can gain an insight into traditional activities, local food and the history of the area.
