An authentic experience in the heart of the Kalahari
The Dqae Qare San Lodge, located about 24 kilometers outside Ghanzi in Botswana, offers travelers a unique opportunity to immerse themselves deeply in the culture of the San bushmen. As part of the Dqae Qare Game Farm, a 7,500-hectare private wildlife reserve, the lodge is entirely operated by the San community and serves as an important source of income for the local population.
Accommodations at Dqae Qare San Lodge
The lodge features a total of 16 rooms, housed in a converted old farmhouse. The rooms are rustic and functional, equipped with private bathrooms, mosquito nets, and some electrical lighting, which is only available when the generator is running. For guests seeking a more immersive experience, four traditional Bushman huts are available, offering an even more authentic stay.
For campers, there is a spacious campsite under the shade of camelthorn trees. Each pitch is equipped with traditional windbreaks and a central fire pit with barbecue facilities. Sanitary facilities include warm solar-heated showers and a covered dishwashing station.
The lodge serves meals in a traditional thatched dining area. Campers can also enjoy meals if booked in advance. A small on-site shop sells souvenirs such as San jewelry and handicrafts, all made by the local community. For relaxation, guests can use the swimming pool, ideal for cooling off after a hot day in the Kalahari.
Activities and tours at Dqae Qare San Lodge
The Dqae Qare San Lodge is not just a place to stay—it is a living center for cultural and nature-based experiences. Guests can participate in guided bush walks, where they learn traditional fire-making techniques, track animals, and gather edible plants. A highlight is the “Bushman Experience,” where visitors can immerse themselves in the San way of life. This includes building grass huts, hunting using traditional methods, making jewelry from ostrich eggshells, and learning the games and dances of the San.
For wildlife enthusiasts, the adjoining game reserve provides opportunities to observe various animals such as giraffes, zebras, kudus, and eland antelopes. Self-guided game drives are allowed, but for a more in-depth experience, guests can also join guided safaris.
